Blue jay is generally a benevolent being who is helpful to humankind, but also extremely foolish and careless, and stories about him are often humorous or even slapstick in nature.
Many Native American tribes have negative opinions about blue jays because of their noisy, aggressive behaviour.
In legends, blue jays often play the role of nosy gossip, bully or selfish thief. But in some North-western tribes blue jay is a more ambivalent trickster character, still selfish, greedy, and mischievous most of the time, but also clever, entertaining, and helpful to humankind.
